Urban Decay All Nighter Concealer Review | Better Than Shape Tape?

Near the end of 2017, the beauty community was abuzz with the release of a new full coverage concealer. Urban Decay released their All Nighter Concealer as an accompaniment to their already successful All Nighter Foundation, and people were impressed. When I heard the rave reviews and the comparisons people were making between this and the infamous Shape Tape Concealer from Tarte, I knew I wanted to give it a try.

A few months back, I did a complete roundup on all the best and worst concealers I’ve tried in my Concealer Rundown for Bad Dark Circles. I have hereditary dark circles that are quite dark and are always there no matter what. The winner in my previous rundown was the Shape Tape, but I did mention that I was still holding out hope for something even better. Could the All Nighter be what I was searching for?

The first thing I noticed with this concealer is that it’s a much drier formula than I’m accustomed to. Also, despite the fact that this product comes with a normal sized doe foot applicator, not much product would come off after each dip. I felt like I had to dip into the tube multiple times during the application process. This made my makeup routine slightly longer than it needed to be and was a little on the frustrating side, especially considering how much concealer I need.

I followed my normal concealer application habits mentioned in my previous post: a color corrector followed by two layers and set with powder. I will say that despite the dry formula, this concealer doesn’t require too much blending. In fact, as long as you don’t let it dry on your skin too much first, I would say this concealer blends the quickest and easiest out of all the ones I’ve tried.

But here’s where things fall apart. The concealer looks great when I first apply it to my undereyes: great coverage, very little creasing with almost no darkness showing through. However, as the day goes on it seems to fade. The coverage gets less and less and by the end of an average work day, I can see my dark circles pretty clearly.

If I was only heading out for a quick excursion, this wouldn’t be a problem. But I need a concealer that looks as good at the end of the day as it did at the beginning.

Does It Beat Shape Tape?

For me, this is a definite NO. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for this concealer in my life. I’d say this comes in as a solid second place option. I know that even though it doesn’t perform the best in the long run that I will still use it from time to time. On days where I don’t need 8+ hours of coverage, I know I will reach for this. At this point I don’t think I would repurchase it, but I will use up what I have.

The Urban Decay All Nighter Concealer retails for $29, and my shade is in Fair Neutral.

The search continues!
