A few weeks back, Sephora quietly launched a high end one-time version of their usual Play! box. The Play! by Sephora Iconic Edition promised sample-sized products from some very high end, luxury beauty brands at the cost of $20 (double the price of a normal box). It was only available to VIB rouge and only for a limited time. I was curious enough to pick one up, then decided to go back and get a second one to do a giveaway.
Even the packaging and booklet were more luxurious in this box. Everything has a very lux feel to it.
Let’s take a look at what was inside!
There are a lot of brands to be excited about in this box, but of them all I was most excited to see La Mer represented. In case you didn’t know, La Mer is one of the most crazy expensive skin care lines in existence. I’m not sure I ever would have ended up trying La Mer if I had to pay for it myself. The sample here is quite small, but a little goes a long way and I’ll probably be able to get a few weeks of use out of it. So far I’ve noticed that this moisturizer has made my skin super soft. So soft, in fact, that I spent a few minutes the other morning being amazed at how smooth my skin was and wondering what product was responsible. It was this!
I really like this scent! It’s also surprisingly one I’ve never tried before in sample form (you should see the collection of perfume samples I’m trying to work through). The only complaint I have is that this sample bottle doesn’t come with a sprayer, which makes application difficult. Otherwise, it’s so good I could see possibly investing in a larger size someday.
This primer has made the rounds on many YouTube videos in the past year! This is another product I likely wouldn’t have tried if I hadn’t gotten a sample. There are actual gold flecks contained inside which are supposed to increase luminosity. I found that once blended into the skin, the gold bits don’t really show up. Did I get a subtle glow? Somewhat. But I don’t think this primer is worth the hefty price tag.
This lipstick is the only real dud in the box for me. The color is very bright and not especially wearable. Not only that, the lipstick has a strong fragrance to it that does not go away even after applied to the lips. I could actually taste it, and it was like tasting perfume. Overall, I didn’t like anything about this – color, formula or scent.
I’ve never tried anything by the brand Burberry before, and this mascara looks like it will be impressive. I’m not allowing myself to use it just yet, only because I’m trying to get through a stack of already opened mascaras before they go bad. This will be one of the first ones I try once that time comes!
If there’s one thing to be disappointed about in this box, it’s the inclusion of two different fragrances. While they’re both “deluxe” samples, most of us can get these high end perfume samples in other subscription boxes or just by requesting them in store. I’ve tried Black Orchid many times before, so this is the only product in the box that wasn’t new to me. Luckily, I do very much enjoy the scent and will use this up. If I could make a recommendation to Sephora about future boxes like this it would be to only include one fragrance.
